Taking a Stand Against Rising Crime With Legislative Action

In response to the escalating concerns over rising crime, attempted home invasions, and attempted auto thefts, I worked with councilmen Dr. Michael Armento, Mike Domogala, and David Kiefer to write a letter on January 22, 2024 asking Senator Bramnick, Assemblywoman Matsikoudis, and Assemblywoman Munoz, to help take immediate action.

In the letter (attached on bottom of the page), we expressed our concerns for the safety and well-being of Westfield residents and urged the legislative team to consider and pass comprehensive measures aimed at addressing key issues contributing to the surge in criminal activities. The letter highlighted five crucial areas that demand immediate attention:

Vacancies in the Judiciary: We need swift appointments to address vacancies within the judiciary, ensuring that the legal process remains efficient and effective.

Juvenile Offenders: Recognizing the importance of rehabilitation, we advocated for measures to address and assist juvenile offenders, focusing on programs that aim to redirect young lives toward a more positive trajectory.

Stiffer Sentences for Repeat Offenders: To deter repeat offenders, we called for the implementation of stricter sentences, ensuring that those who persist in criminal behavior face consequences commensurate with the severity of their actions.

Pre-trial Detention Reform: In the letter, we underscored the necessity of reforming pre-trial detention procedures to prevent individuals with a history of criminal activities from posing further threats to the community while awaiting trial.

Busting Car Theft Rings: We urged legislative action to tackle organized car theft rings, emphasizing the importance of collaboration between law enforcement agencies and the community to curb rising crime.

As a result of this, Assemblywoman Michele Matsikoudis has taken up the cause and is actively working towards implementing these measures. She has initiated the drafting of specific bills that will be introduced in the coming days to the General Assembly, demonstrating a commitment to effective legislative action.

Together we can push Westfield forward, and that starts with public safety.

Thank you again to all the residents that reached out. It's time that we make our voices heard, and make change in Trenton.
